With prices soaring and taxes on the rise again, how can you afford to buy essentials and non-essentials for your home, let alone redecorate?

There are many ways in which you can buy things for your house, whether it is in shops, at a retailers' outlet (shopping village), by catalogue or on the internet. But which is the best option? They all have positives so take a look into all of them!

As always when you are thinking about buying bits and pieces for the home or redecorating, it sends a great vibe and gives a nicer ambience if they all match or coordinate well with each other. After having this planned, which option are you going to choose?

Many shops are now offering store cards which can give you a large incentive to sign-up. The benefits are constantly changing so see when may be the best time to hand over your details. Many of the stores offer a discount on your first purchase ( Debenhams and Beales offer 10%) so make sure that you take full advantage of this as it could save you a lot of money ( Bhs and Marks & Spencer offer other incentives which may benefit you more so take a look at what they can offer you). The stores can also have added benefits where they offer privileges such as sale previews, collecting points to earn vouchers and other discounts around their store. However, you can only make savings if you pay off your card on time in full each month due to the high interest rates.

There are many outlet centres/shopping villages around the UK that contain many different stores that sell top brands ( Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Christy, Black & Decker etc) at a discounted price. Generally you will find stock that is surplus or has a flaw (known as seconds). Many of the items that are advertised as seconds have imperfections that are hard to see so are a great buy but the ones to avoid are bed linen and towels with pulled thread or cracks in china and ceramics.

Factory shops are another option that are permanent discount outlets. They sell a mixture of discontinued lines, ex-display, returned goods/orders and seconds. You can buy anything from bathroom to bedroom and reductions can be as high as 70%.

Catalogues are a great way to shop if you hate the traffic and crowds and if your eyes get tired on the computer screen. Catalogues give you lots of new and fresh ideas and you can hold the pages up to your desired room to see what matches best. You can also take advantage of some great offers that are being thrown at new customers. The best of them offer 20% discounts on first orders whereas other catalogues are offering 10% off of every item! It tends to be that you can get a better deal if you pay all in one go rather than opening a credit account. Just as the store cards, you can also gain loyalty points to receive money off vouchers, discounts or sale previews.  Littlewoods, Home Essentials, Next, Freemans and Argos are just a few of the home décor and accessory catalogues that you should take a look at.

Apart from the normal shopping online and department store websites, companies like ebay.co.uk and amazon.co.uk are selling a great selection of home necessities, essentials and must haves and they can afford to sell it cheap. These online stores can offer new or used items and the main reason for their fabulously priced items is that online stores do not have to pay for the large ground rent that shops and department stores must. This therefore allows them to charge below high-street prices, even though you are getting the same quality.

Other great websites to look at are price comparison websites such as moneysupermarket.com and kelkoo.co.uk.  There are many others out there too so don’t be afraid to have a look!

Good luck and happy shopping!
